A 16-team schools and community sports extravaganza held annually on Heroes Day took place at Matoranhembe Secondary School in Murombedzi on Monday.
Dubbed ‘Mutsa Ziyambi tournament’, the finals of the event were held on Heroes Day.
The finals featured 8 teams in soccer, 4 drawn from schools and 4 from the community.
Mutsa Ziyambi, sponsor of the tournament, said the event is meant to promote sport in rural areas and to remind participants of the role played by former freedom fighters in bringing the freedom young people enjoy today.
Participants hailed the programme for affording them an opportunity to showcase their talent, while Zvimba District sports officer Perpetual Zvasiya described the showcase as dovetailing well into the national sports policy.
Two soccer players were identified by scouts 2 years ago during the tournament and are playing for local Division One clubs.
