The Zanu PF Masvingo provincial executive has requested the politburo to consider declaring the late Minister of State for Masvingo province, Cde Shuvai Mahofa, a national heroine.

Speaking to ZBC News, the Masvingo provincial chairperson, Cde Ezra Chadzamira said the province is now waiting for a response from the politburo.

Cde Mahofa collapsed at her home in Rhodene, Masvingo yesterday early yesterday after complaining of failing to breathe properly and was rushed to Makurira Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mourners in Harare are gathered at House Number 16 Haupp Road, Coronation Park, Greendale and 116 McGee Road, Rhodene in Masvingo.


‘Cde Mahofa a trusted cadre, a seasoned politician’

Meanwhile, the late Cde Mahofa has been described by many as a seasoned politician who will be difficult to replace.

Scores of people who include several government officials continue to visit the late Cde Mahofa’s home in Rhodene to pay their condolences.

Government officials who included, Cde Jorum Gumbo the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development and the Minister of State for Liaising on Psychomotor Activities in Education Cde Josiah Hungwe were among the many officials who visited the Mahofa residence Tuesday afternoon.

Daughter to the late Cde Mahofa, Ms Fungai Mahofa, told mourners what transpired moments before her mother collapsed, saying her mother’s last words were in the form of a prayer.

“Mai pavati ndifonere Dr vakabva vatanga kunamata vakati Mwari chengetai vana vangu, muchengete nemhuri yeZimbabwe, vachingopedza munamato iwoyo she then collapsed,” she said.

Cde Gumbo said Cde Mahofa was a seasoned politician whose shoes will be difficult to fill.

“The gap left by Mai Mahofa will be hard to fill. She was a very strong person with wisdom to handle politics,” Dr Gumbo said.

Consoling the mourners, Cde Josiah Hungwe said the province has been left poorer without Cde Mahofa.

Mourners are gathered at Number 116 McGee Road in Rhodene, Masvingo.

In Bulawayo, the Zanu PF leadership has sent a message of condolences to the Mahofa family following the passing on of Cde Mahofa.

Zanu PF Central Committee member Cde Absalom Sikhosana said they are saddened by the untimely loss of Cde Mahofa, a seasoned politician.

Cde Mahofa, a trusted cadre, was part of President Mugabe’s campaign team in 1995 which included the then two vice presidents Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo and Cde Simon Muzenda, together with the then national chairman Cde Joseph Msika.

Cde Sikhosana said the passing on of Cde Mahofa was a shock to the nation as she had not been hospitalised for any ailment.

Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
