Richwood hosts ‘Wheelchair Revival’ basketball tourney

Richwood Sports Club this weekend hosted a four team tournament dubbed “Wheelchair Revival” basketball tournament aimed at reviving and uplifting the fortunes of the game. The sport which has had waning fortunes in past few years due to shortage of players, equipment and spares for wheelchairs has seen a reduction in the number of active clubs in Harare and Zimbabwe as a nation. A handful of clubs including hosts Richwood, Danhiko, Jairos Jiri, Wolves and newcomers Mutare Mountain Lions are currently playing on a regular basis, although the sport has been featuring prominently during the national paralympic and youth games. The four teams were engaged in thrilling and exciting tournament, played on a round robin basis. The teams were a mix of youth and experienced players and generated some exciting matches. Richwood Sports Club hopes to re-ignite the passion for the game of wheelchair basketball, develop and expose more young and upcoming players. Gunman kills one in Bronx Borough, New York

A gunman opened fire with an assault rifle inside a hospital in the Bronx Borough New York, killing one doctor and injuring six other people, five of them seriously. The gunman, a former doctor at the hospital, killed himself in the attack. Local mayor, Bill De Blasio said the shooting was isolated and appeared to be workplace-related. He also said several of the injured are fighting for their lives. The gunman has not been officially named but police sources told US media he was Henry Bello, a former family-medicine doctor at the hospital. Sources quoted by NBC said he had resigned in 2015 in lieu of termination. Mr O’Neill said the gunman had tried to set himself on fire and died of a self-inflicted wound....

ZICOSU, UZ SRC condemn Mawarire

The Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (ZICOSU) and the University of Zimbabwe students representative body SRC have condemned activist Pastor Evan Mawarire for hijacking their peaceful protest against a fees hike for medical students to further his political aspirations. UZ SRC president Steven Tsikirayi expressed grave concern at Mawirire’s conduct of hijacking a genuine peaceful protest by students from the department of medicine over fees hikes to perpetuate his political interests and instructed Mawarire not to interfere in his arena by poisoning students whose only intention is to get valuable education at a fair cost. Sikhobokhobo dominates Bulawayo arts awards

The inaugural  Bulawayo arts awards lived up to their top billing with a flawless event that saw Madlela Sikhobokhobo being the toast of the evening scooping three awards. It was a night of glitz and glamour as the City of Kings cemented its position as the home of the arts industry through a well organised event at the large city hall yesterday evening. From the fashion designs to the performances by various artists as well as the choreography of the whole event, it was evidenced that a once sleeping giant had suddenly awaken. A packed venue with arts enthusiasts saw Sikhobokhobo ruling the roost as he walked away the best actor which earned him a two year scholarship to study the arts courtesy of the Creative College of the Arts Africa, as best newcomer and his popular hit ‘Ngamnanka Usamamoe’ being voted the song of the year. The eccentric Sikhobokhobo was on top of the moon as he received his token. Talented hip hop artist Cal-vin also weighed in with two awards, scooping the best hip hop artist and the outstanding male artist accolade. President Mugabe leaves for Addis Ababa

President Robert Mugabe has left Harare to join other heads of state and government from the continent at the 29th ordinary session of the  African Union (AU) which is the highest decision making organ of the AU. The summit kicked off on the 27th of June and will run up to the 4th of July,  under the theme “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend Through Investments in Youth”. The summit will be the first with the full participation of all the 55 African countries, after the admission of the Kingdom of Morocco during the 28th AU assembly in January this year....

Govt urged to capacitate small scale miners

Government has been urged to capacitate small scale miners for the sector to realise potential. Hundreds of small scale miners drawn from Mashonaland Central Province converged in Bindura for the Minex Conference and Exhibition. The platform brought together miners and stakeholders to share their experiences and expectations. Zvishavane Publicity Association launched

The establishment of Zvishavane Publicity Association (ZPA) will go a long way in promoting all aspects of Zvishavane which include mining, sport, arts, culture and tourism. Speaking during the launch of ZPA, the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Honourable Anastancia Ndlovu encouraged Zvishavane community to diversify their tourism products by introducing community based tourism projects.
