A local youths organisation has raised concern over the alarming levels of drug abuse by the youths, saying more awareness campaigns and drastic legal measures should be taken against suppliers and abusers of the drugs.

This comes after revelations that drug abuse has reached alarming levels of over 60 percent in the country.

For Youths by Youths Organisation Director, Wilbert Jena said campaigns such as the one conducted in Mufakose, Harare should be cascaded to all the towns and districts in the country.

Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network Administrator, Mr Tinashe Chiweshe said the worrying increase of drug abuse also increases the level of crime in society.

Abuse of prescribed drugs and pills continues to be on the increase as well, according to the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe Public Relations Officer, Mr Shingai Gwatidzo.

Drug abuse does not only have a negative impact on the health of abusers but affects production as the most energetic youths who should work for the country are rendered useless.
