Enact laws on fake seed: Seed houses

Local seed houses have appealed to policy makers to enact laws that control the circulation of fake seeds on the market, saying such practices affect crop yield. Speaking after the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands, Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development had toured the SEEDCO Research Centre in Harare, SEEDCO Managing Director, Mr Denias Zaranyika said the proliferation of fake seed on the market during farming seasons remains a challenge. He called on the need to prioritise research to empower farmers with disease resistant and drought tolerant varieties. Global Head Research and Development, Professor John Derera agreed on the need to promote research, saying breeding programmes are central to food security. Zim, Botswana unite to fight human-wildlife conflict

Zimbabwe and Botswana have held a two day planning workshop to discuss the development of the Hwange-Kazuma-Chobe wildlife dispersal area as part of the initiatives to mitigate cases of human-wildlife conflict in the two countries. The meeting, which was held at Hwange National Park, was coordinated by the Kavango Zambezi Trans-Frontier Conservation Area (KAZA-TFCA) and is being funded by a German development bank, KFW to the tune of 1,9 million euros. Cde Ezra Chadzamira has been elected the substantive chairperson for Zanu PF Masvingo Province after receiving 29 543 votes to beat his fellow party member, Cde Mutero Masanganise who accrued 1080 votes. A total of 30 742 people from Masvingo Province took to the polls this Saturday to elect a new chairperson in a re-run of elections. Former member and vocalist of one of Zimbabwe’s finest and famous music groups, The Harare Mambo, Virginia Sillah Jangano has died. Sillah Jangano died at Hillingdon Hospital in London, United Kingdom around 1930hrs yesterday, Saturday 6 May 2017.
