TP Mazembe arrive ahead of Champions League tie

DRC giants TP Mazembe is now in the country ahead of their CAF Champions League encounter against Caps United slated for the National Sports Stadium this Sunday. TP Mazembe touched down at the Harare International Airport this Friday (today), setting the stage for what promises to be a potential CAF Champions League thriller. The DRC giants arrived with a 100 member delegation of players, officials and fans who were in a bullish mood despite being held to a 1-all draw in the reverse fixture in Lubumbashi last weekend. Afrobasket qualifiers on tomorrow

The Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) says the Afrobasket qualifier matches against Mozambique will be played on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 3pm at the City Sports Centre. The Zimbabwe Afrobasket team for the qualifiers is expected to train at the venue which was still being set up with the wooden floor and hoops still to be put in place. Mozambique were expected in the country on Friday evening for the qualifiers. The Region 5 qualifiers were supposed to involve Mozambique, Botswana, Madagascar and hosts Zimbabwe but will now be played over two legs, home and away basis following the withdrawal by Botswana and Madagascar. Zimbabwe on Thursday named a strong 13 member team, with France based Vitalis Chikoko and Robert Tinotenda Mugabe Jnr who is unattached among the core of the team that participated at the 2015 Afrobasket in Tunisia were also retained. All is now set for the Twin Rivers Junior Chess championships slated for this Saturday at Twin Rivers Junior School in the capital. Over 130 players have already confirmed their participation with the tournament also attracting players from Chivhu and Gokwe. Zanu PF youths roll out massive mobilisation programme

The Zanu PF Youth League says it is rolling out a massive mobilisation programme in support for President Robert Mugabe ahead of the 2018 harmonised elections. Zanu PF Secretary for Youth Affairs Cde Kudzai Chipanga said despite skirmishes aimed at weakening the Youth League, the party wing remains the only youth movement that has astonishing capacity to mobilise the youths in the country. Bulawayo holds day of prayer, thanksgiving

The City of Bulawayo held a day of prayer and thanksgiving in appreciation of the blessing of rains that characterised Zimbabwe’s summer cropping season this year. The thanksgiving day was held at the large City Hall this Thursday. The Bulawayo City Council brought together the city fathers, pastors of various churches and the community of Bulawayo for prayer and thanksgiving for the plentiful rains. Umzingwane, Mtshabezi, Upper Ncema and Lower Ncema among other dams are spilling and will be able to supply the City of Kings with water for at least five years. The good rains, have however adversely affected the conditions of the roads leaving a loud call for city fathers to deal with the situation. Farmers in Marondera hail command agriculture

Farmers at Shayanhowe Farm in Marondera say they are already reaping the benefits of the command agriculture programme with a promise of a bumper harvest that will ensure the country is food secure. A1 farmers at Shayanhowe Farm in Marondera told the parliamentary portfolio committee on lands, agriculture, mechanisation and irrigation development who toured the farm to appreciate progress on the command agriculture programme that they have the capacity to produce enough food to feed their families and contribute to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB). The farmers also appealed for support towards reviving their irrigation scheme to boost production. Chairperson of the portfolio committee Cde Christopher Chitindi says the government is committed to supporting the farmers so that they contribute to the country’s grain reserves. Shukokai karatekas Simenti, Utete elevated

Karatekas Collen Utete and Bothwell Simenti of Shukokai Karate Club have been upgraded following a brilliant year on the karate sporting calendar. The Shukokai Karate Club continues to grow in leaps and bounds after two of their products Simenti and Utete were  elevated. Simenti who was in blue belt has since received a brown belt while Utete now has a first dan black belt. Utete could not hide his joy following his achievement, saying he feels motivated. President Cde Robert Mugabe has arrived in Swaziland for an extraordinary summit on industrialisation and regional economic integration. ZSE ends week in positive

Trading on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange closed the week in positive territory with the industrial index adding 0.34 points to close at 137.47 points. Old Mutual gained 2.58 cents to trade at 350.41 cents. ZB Financial Holdings advanced by a further 1.30 cents to settle at 10.50 cents while Innscor was up by 1.12 cents to 45.00 cents. Seedco was 0.19 cents stronger at 93.50 cents. CFI was the only counter trading in the negative losing 1.04 cents to close at 10.96 cents. Delta, Fidelity Life, OK Zimbabwe and Powerspeed traded unchanged at 86.00 cents, 10.00 cents, 6.00 cents and 2.10 cents in that order. Week on week, the industrial index added 2.11 points (1.56%). The mining index shed 2.47 points to settle at 53.59 points. Bindura came off 0.30 cents to trade at 3.00 cents while Hwange eased 0.10 cents to end at 2.90 cents.
