Treasury has set aside US$62 million with intentions to mobilise a further US$80 million through the Agriculture  Marketing Authority for the purchase of grain in the 2016/2017 season.

Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Dr Joseph Made told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Peace and Security that the ministry is ready for harvesting the 2016/17 crop.

Dr Made also said besides the budget addressing issues of grain storage, the condition of silos and the movement of grain, the country has a total of 195 fully functional combine harvesters while the non-functional ones are also being repaired.

The 2016/17 agricultural season has been tipped to be good although there are challenges which might arise on the condition of infrastructure due to the heavy rains.
