Speaking during a handover ceremony of a 20-seater minibus, foodstuffs and medicines to Bumhudzo Old People’s Home in Chitungwiza, Permanent Secretary in the Home Affairs Ministry, Mr. Melusi Matshiya said government is committed to assist the disadvantaged in line with the mandate of the Lotteries and Gaming Board.
The Salvation Army which runs Bumhudzo received the donation.
Territorial Commander, of The Salvation Army, Commissioner Vinece Chigariro said the donation will go a long way in improving the lives of the elderly who now depend on others’ good will for their needs.
“To me what the Permanent Secretary has done is very great, he has brought hope to the old people. They now look beyond the world, they can see other things which they had been deprived because of age and coming to the home,†said Commissioner Chigariro.
Bumhudzo Old People’s home located in Chitungwiza was established in 1974 and can accommodate up to 100 elderly persons.
However, the home currently has 58 inmates due to lack of funding to admit more people.
