high court building.jpgThe 2011 Legal Year will be officially opened on Monday the 10th of January. Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku is expected to officiate.

Major cases expected to be handled by the High Court include include the Zimbabwe Mining Development Company (ZMDC) bosses who are facing criminal abuse of office and fraud and the case of the African Consolidated Resources (ACR) which allegedly misrepresented facts to government to be granted a license to mine diamonds in Chiadzwa.

According to an official from the Attorney General’s Office, at least 20 murder cases are also on the register and are expected to be dealt with during this legal term.

The official opening of the new legal year will be attended by magistrates, representatives from the Specialised Courts, the Labour Court and the Administrative Court since they are now operating under the Judiciary Service Commission.

Stakeholders in the judiciary and representatives from the country’s 140 law firms are also expected to attend the event.
