About 170 junior football players aged between 15 and 22 are tussling it out at Milton High School in Bulawayo hoping to impress a United States coach and earn scholarships at the University of Kentucky.
The football scholarship programme is seeking two players who have a combined excellence in football, academics and the right personality to get an opportunity to further their studies as well as advance their football career at the University of Kentucky in USA.
The University of Kentucky coach and scout David Casper noted the programme has been a major success with some players going on to do well in their careers thus the importance tag attached to it.
Representative of Payne Global Sports, the organisers of the trials, Brian Moyo, pointed out that his organisation is driven by the possibilities of success in many youngsters as evidenced by those who have walked the path before.
The likes of Methembe Ndlovu, Mkhokheli Dube and Lewis Banda have benefitted from such programmes which went on to improve not only their performance but their lives as well.
All the players taking part in the trials had to possess a minimum of 5 O’ levels as an entry point with local coaches from Bulawayo teams also in attendance.
