At least 17 people have been killed in an exchange of gunfire between Somalia’s Al-Shabab fighters and government forces in the country’s south.
Al-Shabab said they killed 11 government forces and injured dozens more in their assault in the South-western region of Gedo yesterday.
The attack occurred when Al-shabab fighters ambushed government troops between Luuq and Garbaharey districts.
An Al-shabab official in the Gedo region, Sheikh Yunis Abu-zeyd, said the fighters attacked government soldiers who were heading to the Garbaharey area, adding that the fighters also burned a military vehicle.
However, a government commander in Gedo, Mohamed Abdi Kalil, said Somali troops killed eight fighters in the gunfire and seized the fighters’ weapons.
