comesa summit.jpgThe 15th COMESA Summit of Heads of States and Government has been officially opened in Lilongwe, Malawi with a call for the implementation of the economic groupings’ programmes for the empowerment of the disadvantaged through equal distribution of natural resources.


Outgoing COMESA Chairman, King Mswati III commended progress made by the economic block and said efforts should be made towards harnessing science in the agricultural sector to ensure food security.

King Mswati handed over the chairmanship of regional body to Malawian President, Professor Bingu Wa Mutharika who will be holding the post for the next 12 months.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Wa Mutharika said during his tenure of office he will ensure that all COMESA programmes are supported to speed up poverty reduction in the region.

Head of State and Government and Commander In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe is among the economic blocks’ leaders attending the summit whose theme is-‘Harnessing Science and Technology for Development.’
