An 11 year old girl from Matenda area is appealing for $40 000 to undergo a skin treatment in India.
The girl was dumped by her mother at birth as she was born with scales all over the body.
It is reported the mother initially wanted to abort her.
The mother had to succeed during the second attempt after she fled to Gweru leaving the girl in the custody of her grandmother, an ailing Gogo Chirashwa.
Gogo Chirashwa said she had no option but to relocate to the rural area after efforts to raise the $40 000 hit a brick wall for the girl to undergo a skin treatment in India.
“We have tried in vain to raise money after a Gweru based medical practioner advised the ailment can only be cured in India,” Gogo Chirashwa said.
Tanya, an intelligent Grade 5 pupil who is always come out on first position at school said she had to leave with the outcast tag with her colleagues labelling her all sorts of names.
“They call me Garwe (crocodile) but my grandmother told me to leave them alone,” she said.
So dire is the situation that even village head Godfrey Muguvisi confirms the family is always on the priority list of needy families.
“Life is not good for the family and I am appealing for assistance on their behalf so that the child undergo skin treatment in India,” he said.
Like any other child, Tanya endures the 10 km distance to school hoping things will change for better.
They say there is more happiness in giving than in receiving.
