A sombre atmosphere gripped Chishawasha Mission Primary School as pupils and parents alike failed to come to terms with the death of Kudzaishe Mandaza who was a Grade 5 pupil at the school.

Pupils from the school are said to have complained of diarrhoea and vomiting after consuming sadza and meat alleged to have been bought at OK Supermarket in Masvingo.

The pupils numbering about 400 had gone on school trip to tour the Great Zimbabwe Monument, Lake Mutirikwi and Kyle Game Park.

Kudzaishe’s sister, Mrs Plaxedes Mudyariwa expressed grief at the loss of her brother.

“The child suffered a lot. OK should cook their food properly,” said Mrs Mudyariwa.

Kudzaishe died on Monday evening at the Avenues Clinic in Harare. He was 10.

Parents who attended the funeral expressed dissatisfaction at the school’s handling of the matter as they felt the authorities did not do enough to safeguard their children’s health.

The School Head, Sister Esteri Regina Chinyani was not available for comment, while the Provincial Education Director from Mashonaland East Province, Sylvester Matshaka said he had not yet received a written report on the matter.

Meanwhile, OK Zimbabwe’s spokesperson, Chipo Mashingaidze said they are carrying out their own investigations on the issue.
