The United Nations acting country coordinator has paid tribute to the government of Zimbabwe and applauded the sense of solidarity demonstrated by the people as well as the private sector who have mobilised themselves to provide the much needed support to the people affected by Cyclone Idai.

Dr Esther Muia said the UN stands ready to support the government in coordination of the relief efforts and so far a multi sectoral team consisting UN technical experts has been deployed to affected areas to conduct a joint rapid needs assessment in conjunction with local authorities.

The UN has allocated US$20 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, countries devastated by the cyclone.
